There is a difference between your service file and ours. You have:
Type=notify
ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID
and we have:
Type=notify-reload
ExecReload=
This latter setting allows systemd to send SIGHUP to knot, and does
*not* require an ExecReload command to be specified. In theory, both of
these should work in the same way when we run "systemctl reload knot".
With the former configuration, systemd will just send the SIGHUP, but
will not wait for any messages from knot.
The latter configuration will make systemd send SIGHUP, and then wait
for the RELOADING=1 message, and then the READY=1 message.
I haven't looked at the systemd.c file to check whether the correct
messages are being sent. Is it possible that the READY=1 message isn't
being sent?
Our service file looks like

master/distro/common/knot.service
I'm not aware of any issues.
