Thanks, but building from sources usually introduces fewer surprises. For example, when using the instructions you gave, I get.

W: GPG error: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/CZ-NIC:/knot-resolver-latest/xUbuntu_16.04  Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 74062DB36A1F4009
E: The repository 'http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/CZ-NIC:/knot-resolver-latest/xUbuntu_16.04  Release' is not signed.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

Is it possible to get the libknot package on Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS updated soon? If not, how do I install the latest libknot by hand?

The easiest way to get *newest* released knot-resolver for a few distributions should be via:
https://software.opensuse.org//download.html?project=home%3ACZ-NIC%3Aknot-resolver-latest&package=knot-resolver

This new distribution approach hasn't fully settled yet, but it should work already.
